Webinar Recording: Seed to Seed
Join Hudson Valley Seed Company co-founder and managing director Doug Muller for a behind-the-scenes look at seed farming in the Hudson Valley! Doug discusses the ins and outs of native seed production and propagation, including the Seed Company's multi-year path to launching its new PollinateHV Local Ecotype Seed Collection in partnership with PCA.
The PollinateHV seed collection includes nearly 20 locally native plant species, all originating from ethically wild-harvested seed sourced within the Hudson Valley bioregion. The plants in this collection support some of our most vulnerable native pollinators, and a portion of sales support PCA’s pollinator work. Seven seed species are available now, with more to come in future seasons.
In this webinar we’ll learn what it means for a plant to be "local ecotype" - and why it's the gold standard when planting to support native pollinators and local ecologies. Plus, we’ll discover some of Doug's favorite native seeds and simple techniques to grow your own.
About our speaker: Doug Muller returned to his home state of New York in 2005 after earning a B.A. at Harvard and spending three years teaching high school English in South Florida. After he and his partner, K Greene, built a cabin and learned to grow food, his efforts shifted into the early incarnation of the Hudson Valley Seed Company, serving as the tech expert, copywriter, and farm leader. In time, his role shifted into that of Managing Director, supervising all day-to-day operations and long-term strategic planning as the business grew from a cottage industry run out of the couple's cabin into the team of 25-30 people that currently comprise the company. Throughout this time, he has been fortunate to learn daily from his team and others in the agriculture and seed community about the ins and outs of farming, business management, and entrepreneurship.
